At the Centre for Microsystems Technology (CMST), a research group associated with both Ghent University and imec, a vision on the smart contact lens of tomorrow is being developed. By integrating electronic components such as a solar cell, a microbattery and and integrated chip contact lenses could become ‚Smart’, and perform tasks that are currently impossible.
Applications could include lenses that can sense biomedical parameters, lenses that actively correct your vision or, in the long term, lenses with an integrated display for the ultimate augmented reality experience.
Depending on the application, this could involve charging your smart contact lens overnight so the lens can be fully autonomous during the day.
